Every time a funding announcement lands, the same pattern repeats: a headline figure, a press release about "skills for growth," and almost nothing about what colleges actually do day to day for the towns around them.
Having spent years on the funding and data side of this, the thing that never quite lands publicly is how much of a college's value is local — not in a slogan sense, but literally: employers who can't recruit from anywhere else, adult learners retraining after redundancy, apprenticeship routes that keep young people from leaving the area altogether.
None of that shows up in a single per-student funding rate. It shows up over a decade, in whether a town still has the workforce it needs.
