Just sat through Andy Burnham's first Labour conference speech as PM, and obviously this is an initial reaction rather than a considered review.
I was impressed. Not only by the delivery (which warmed up as it went along), but also the content. For this was a speech with content - for the first time in many months, perhaps years, this was a full list of conviction-rooted ideas and policies, albeit some designed for the relatively distant future.
I think he is on to something by doing this, by ignoring the usual bashing of opponents and tub-thumping. He has not only partially neutered the 'take back control' slogan, but presented a rich seam of convictions-into-policies for the country to mine if they so wish. He has called for positivity (something sorely lacking) and engagement, even with those who disagree with "some or all" of what he said. Idealistic perhaps, but they can then be accused of not playing their part.
It was also a very emotional speech, potentially uncomfortable during the pauses, but quite obviously heartfelt and genuine, and very effective. He is clearly a positive for the party.
